OpenType (.otf)
- Scalable font designed as upgrade over TTF by Adobe & Microsoft.
- Supports extra typesetting features (e.g. ligatures, smallcaps etc.)
- Up to 65,000 stored characters
TrueType (.ttf)
- Basic & most common system font used by OSX and Windows.
SVG
Embedded Open Type (.eot)
- Only supported by IE
- Designed by Microsoft to address copyright issues
- Basically OTF or TTF with metadata and compression supported by all major browsers
- Includes licensing information in the font
WOFF2
- Like WOFF but 30% more compressed
TrueType Collection (.ttc)
- an extension of TTF
- combines multiple fonts into a collection of fonts with many glyphs in common
- supported for all regions in Windows 2000 and later.
Notes
- OTF and TTF are not compressed = larger file size.
