Filetypes

OpenType (.otf)

  • Scalable font designed as upgrade over TTF by Adobe & Microsoft.
  • Supports extra typesetting features (e.g. ligatures, smallcaps etc.)
  • Up to 65,000 stored characters

TrueType (.ttf)

  • Basic & most common system font used by OSX and Windows.

SVG

Embedded Open Type (.eot)

  • Only supported by IE
  • Designed by Microsoft to address copyright issues

Web Open Font Format (.woff)

  • Basically OTF or TTF with metadata and compression supported by all major browsers
  • Includes licensing information in the font

WOFF2

  • Like WOFF but 30% more compressed

TrueType Collection (.ttc)

  • an extension of TTF
  • combines multiple fonts into a collection of fonts with many glyphs in common
  • supported for all regions in Windows 2000 and later.

Notes

  • OTF and TTF are not compressed = larger file size.
